Share Psychotherapy's

One Year Psychodynamic Introductory Course

Share’s one year introductory course in psychodynamic psychotherapy meets weekly for one hour over the course of a year using our own premises as a base. The aim of the course is to provide grounding in psychodynamic psychotherapy for those who already have some relevant experience in counselling or psychotherapy. It forms part of an overall package we offer to counsellors and psychotherapists who are in training and wish to deepen their understanding of psychodynamic psychotherapy.

As a therapist in training you will attend weekly sessions to study the core areas of psychodynamic psychotherapy both in theory and practice. You are expected to undertake preparatory reading for these seminars. Share also has a library of books that trainees can use which is regularly updated.

You will be assessed by your trainers and supervisor at the end of training as to your successful completion of the course. The components of assessment include a satisfactory attendance rate and an oral viva.

Each seminar is led by a member of the Share Psychotherapy staff team. Psychodynamic concepts such as developmental theory, transference and counter transference, symbolism and defence mechanisms will be studied.

As well as this theoretical study we will give you the chance to develop practical skills and to put your training into practice. After an initial period, when your suitability to see Share clients is assessed, you will, see a minimum three clients in a safe, containing environment. You will receive weekly group supervision and regular psychotherapeutic training days to support you. Attendance at supervision is a vital component of your time at Share and apart from illness and personal emergency you are expected to be available for seeing clients and supervision for a minimum of 44 weeks per year.

There is a small charge for the training, which is presently £100 for the year. This charge does not cover the full cost of training, so we expect that, following the completion of your training course, you will carry on with the clients you have until therapy reaches its natural conclusion. We then hope you will continue to volunteer at Share.

Share Psychotherapy offers a good psychotherapeutic community in which to meet other therapists .We hope you will enjoy being a member of our organisation.

The following criteria for enrolment on the 1 year course is:

  • Those who are already qualified and need therapy hours as they work towards accreditation.
  • Those who are on an externally accredited training course and need a placement.
  • Those who have 'life experience' in working with people therapeutically.
