How to start therapy

If you are interested in receiving psychoanalytic psychotherapy you can book yourself an assessment appointment to explore more about psychotherapies.

Application Process

We take either self referrals or referrals from professionals i.e. GP's, Mental Health Workers, Psychiatrists.

When someone contacts us to request more information either by phone, email or the request link from the website, we will send out an Information Booklet, which give a brief explanation of what psychoanalytic psychotherapy entails and information about the different types of therapy which we offer and where we are located (a map with some travel information) and, how much therapy session cost..

With the Booklet there is inculded:-

  • An Application Form
  • A GP referral Form. This is in case you have already consulted your GP and they have recommended psychotherapy. If this is the case we would ask you to have this form filled in by your GP to make sure that psychotherapy fits in with their care plan for you.
  • An Equal Opportunities monitoring form - it is up to you whether you complete and return this form or not.

If you want to refer yourself you can do so either by phoning the office or emailing.  The office administrator is normally available between 10:30am and 15:30pm Monday to Thursday.  If you ring outside these times you can leave your name and address on the answer machine and an Information Booklet and Application Pack will be sent to you.  Similarly, if you email your postal address a pack will be posted out.

Once you have returned your completed application form, and if applicable the GP referral form completed by your GP, we will write to you with details of an assessment appointment.

The Assessment Appointment - This is for you to come and talk about the problems you are experiencing and if we think that psychoanalytic psychotherapy is the best way to help you, we look at a couple of practical things, for example what level of contribution to therapy will you pay and what availability you have for a regular therapy appointment. We ask you to try and give us 10 hours per week in which we could offer you an ongoing appointment. Following you assessment appointment we will send you an agreement. This letter which will outline the times you gave us as being available, the agreed amount you will pay for your therapy and this letter will also list the conditions of you going on to the waiting list. Your name will go on our waiting list along with the times you are available. When an appointment, which meets your needs and matches the times you can come, becomes free, we will write to you with the details of a regular appointment. The regular appointment stays the same every week, takes place on the same weekday, at the same time, with the same therapist.
