Share History and Background

In September 2005, Share celebrated its thirtieth birthday five months after moving from a small house in Crookesmoor Road into its newly-leased premises in Wilkinson Street close to the University and the Hallamshire hospital.

Share began life as the Contact Group Trust in 1967, when it was formed to assist and counsel young people who had problems with drug-addiction. It was based at a day centre in Potters House until 1975, the year in which Share Psychotherapy as an agency - with the help of local statutory services- was formed.

Between 1976 and 1979 the work with overdose patients from Sheffield hospitals was initiated and established. From 1980 to 1983 the sources of referral widened to include mental health issues and direct contact from would-be clients. After 1984 up until 1990 the work was further developed by using volunteers and then initiating a four year training programme for new volunteers.

From 1990 onwards, the development of psychotherapy as a profession led to the introduction of registration as a requirement for our paid staff and to us defining our approach to psychotherapy more clearly. We participated in the general move towards excellent professional standards in service delivery and training.

Centre of Excellence for Professionals

Share Psychotherapy has experience in offering a 1 year psychoanalytic training for our voluntary therapists. We also offer consultation and clinical supervision to psychotherapists and other people, for example: teachers, medical employees and Church professionals.

Work related supervision

Non-managerial work and supervision is offered to professionals interested in developing their understanding of the psychological experiences and needs of clients. This can be either individual or group supervision. Our supervisors come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, with a wide range of professional expertise.

Team Building

Share Psychotherapy also offers team building services, either to facilitate an external group leader, a one-off meeting, such as an away-day or a planned series of meetings. This can be a very helpful way of creating a special setting in which to think about workplace relations.

Organisational Psychoanalytic Consultancy

A psychoanalytic consultant from Share Psychotherapy would visit your organisation/business, over a period of time, to help you think through the development, implementation and processing of change. This could be a one-off meeting or an ongoing group process.
